Thieves steal ‘priceless’ jewelry from the Louvre in seven-minute raid

Thieves have stolen “priceless” jewelry from the Louvre in Paris, the world’s most-visited museum, in an audacious seven-minute raid on Sunday, the French interior minister has said. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez told radio station France Inter: “A major robbery took place this morning in the Apollo Room. Individuals entered the Louvre Museum from outside, using a external freight elevator that was positioned on a truck.”

The Apollo Room houses the French Crown Jewels, as well as treasures including Louis XIV’s hardstone vessel collection.

The thieves forced open a window using an angle grinder and stole jewelry that has “sentimental value and is priceless,” the interior minister added.

There were “three or four perpetrators,” Nuñez said.

Minister of Culture Rachida Dati told French TV station TF1 that one piece of jewelry had been found near the Louvre and was being evaluated.

TF1 and newspaper Le Parisien said the recovered piece was the crown of Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III. The ornate gold piece, which features 1,354 diamonds and 56 emeralds, was damaged in the heist, they said.

Le Parisien said a second piece of jewelry had also been recovered, but did not identify it.

A detailed list of the stolen items is being compiled, the interior ministry said in a statement. “Beyond their market value, the items have inestimable heritage and historical value,” it added.

‘Get out, evacuate’

The robbery took only seven minutes, with the suspects fleeing on motorcycles, Nuñez told France Inter.

“Clearly, a team had been scouting the location. It was obviously a very experienced team that acted very, very quickly,” the interior minister said.

“I am confident that we will very quickly find the perpetrators and, above all, recover the stolen goods,” he added.

Video from the scene showed French police examining an abandoned furniture elevator positioned next to a corner of the Louvre, with its ladder leading up to a broken window off a balcony.

According to Le Parisien’s reporting, the police have found “two angle grinders, a blowtorch, gasoline, gloves, a walkie-talkie, a blanket and a crown” at the scene of the robbery. A yellow vest used by the perpetrators to disguise themselves as workmen was found a bit further away, lost during their escape, the newspaper said.

A tour guide told CNN how he had heard what sounded like “stomping” on the window as he led tourists through the Apollo Room, before hearing shouts from security guards to evacuate.

“I was just trying to figure out what’s happening when I saw the museum staff going to that noise. Then they did a turn around, like real quick, and they started running and saying ‘get out, get out, get out, get out, evacuate!’” Ryan el Mandari said.

He tried to keep his group of visitors calm as they left the building, he said, adding that they heard the sounds but “had no clue that it was a robbery.”

Robbery planned ‘meticulously’

The French interior ministry said the incident took place at 9:30 a.m. local time and that members of the public had been evacuated without incident.

Dati said the robbery had taken place as the museum opened. “No injuries were reported. I am on site alongside museum staff and the police. Investigations are ongoing,” Dati said in a post on X.

The museum, which houses world-famous artworks including Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, said it would remain closed on Sunday due to “exceptional reasons.”

The interior ministry later said the closure was a security measure to preserve evidence for the investigation.

The mayor of Paris Center, Ariel Weil, told reporters that the thieves had “planned this meticulously, obviously” and that he could not recall the Louvre being the target of a robbery in more than a century. “I’m thinking, of course, of the Mona Lisa sting in 1911, but I can’t think of any more recent robbery,” he said.

Last year, the Louvre welcomed 8.7 million visitors, with tourists from the United States making up 13% of all guests, second only to the French.

로랑 누네즈 프랑스 내무장관은 프랑스 인터 라디오와의 인터뷰에서 “오늘 오전 아폴로 전시실에서 대형 절도가 발생했다. 범인들은 박물관 외부에서 진입했으며 트럭에 실려 있던 외부 화물용 엘리베이터를 이용해 루브르 내부로 들어왔다”고 말했다.

아폴로 전시실에는 프랑스 왕실 보석과 루이 14세의 경옥 장식 용기 컬렉션 등을 비롯한 귀중한 유물이 전시돼 있다.

누네즈 장관은 범인들이 앵글 그라인더(절단기)를 사용해 창문을 강제로 열고 “정서적 가치가 크고 가격으로 매길 수 없는” 보석을 훔쳐갔다고 설명했다.

범인은 “3명에서 4명”으로 추정된다고 누네즈 장관은 덧붙였다.

라시다 다티 프랑스 문화부 장관은 현지 방송 TF1과의 인터뷰에서 도난당한 보석 가운데 하나가 루브르 인근에서 발견됐으며 현재 감정 작업이 진행 중이라고 밝혔다.

TF1과 르파리지앵에 따르면, 회수된 유물은 나폴레옹 3세의 아내인 외제니 황후의 왕관으로 알려졌다. 1,354개의 다이아몬드와 56개의 에메랄드로 장식된 화려한 금 왕관이며, 이번 범행 과정에서 손상됐다고 전했다.

르파리지앵은 두 번째 보석도 회수됐다고 보도했으나, 그 구체적인 정체는 확인하지 않았다.

프랑스 내무부는 성명을 통해 현재 도난당한 유물의 상세 목록을 작성 중이라고 밝혔다. 성명은 “시장 가치 이상의, 헤아릴 수 없는 유산적·역사적 가치가 있는 유물들”이라고 강조했다.

“밖으로! 대피하세요!”

누네즈 장관에 따르면 범행은 불과 7분 만에 이루어졌으며 범인들은 오토바이를 타고 도주했다.

그는 “분명 사전에 현장을 정찰한 팀이다. 매우 경험 많은 조직이 매우 신속하게 범행을 저질렀다”고 말했다.

이어 “범인들을 매우 신속하게 검거하고 무엇보다도 도난품을 회수할 것이라고 확신한다”고 덧붙였다.

범행 현장을 촬영한 영상에서는 프랑스 경찰이 루브르 건물 외벽 테라스 근처 부서진 창문 아래 버려진 가구용 승강기를 조사하는 모습이 포착됐다.

르파리지앵 보도에 따르면, 경찰은 범행 현장에서 “각도 그라인더 2대, 블로토치, 휘발유, 장갑, 무전기, 담요, 그리고 왕관”을 발견했다. 또한 범인들이 작업 인부로 위장하는 데 사용한 노란색 조끼 한 벌이 도주 중에 떨어져 현장에서 조금 떨어진 곳에서 발견됐다고 신문은 전했다.

현장에 있던 한 투어 가이드는 CNN에 당시 상황을 설명했다. 그는 아폴로 전시실에서 관광객을 안내하던 중 창문 쪽에서 “쿵쿵거리는 듯한” 소리를 들었고, 이어 보안요원들이 “대피하라”고 소리치는 것을 들었다고 말했다.

투어 가이드 라이언 엘 만다리는 “무슨 일인지 파악하려던 순간 박물관 직원들이 소리가 난 방향으로 달려갔다. 그런데 갑자기 방향을 바꾸더니 빠르게 뛰기 시작했고 밖으로 나가라, 대피하라고 외쳤다”고 전했다.

그는 자신이 이끄는 관광객들을 진정시키며 박물관을 빠져나왔고, “소리는 들었지만 그게 절도 사건인 줄은 전혀 몰랐다”고 말했다.

치밀하게 계획된 범행

프랑스 내무부는 사건은 현지 시간 오전 9시 30분에 발생했으며, 관람객들은 무사히 대피했다고 밝혔다.

다티 장관은 박물관 개장 직후 범행이 이뤄졌다고 밝히며 “부상자는 없다. 현재 현장에서 박물관 직원, 경찰과 함께 있다. 수사는 진행 중”이라고 X(옛 트위터)에 게시했다.

다빈치의 모나리자를 포함한 세계적 걸작을 소장한 루브르 박물관은 “특별한 사유”로 일요일 하루 휴관한다고 밝혔다.

이후 내무부는 조사에 필요한 증거 보존을 위해 보안 조치 차원에서 휴관이 결정됐다고 설명했다.

파리 시청 관계자 아리엘 바일은 “범인들은 명백히 치밀하게 범행을 계획했다”며 “지난 100년 간 루브르가 범죄의 표적이 된 사례는 기억나지 않는다. 1911년 모나리자 도난 사건이 떠오르긴 하지만, 그 이후엔 기억나는 사건이 없다”고 말했다.

루브르 박물관은 지난해 총 870만 명의 방문객을 맞았으며, 그중 미국 관광객이 13%로 프랑스 다음으로 높은 비중을 차지했다.
