  3. Useful Expressions: Filler Words

 Looking back

Can you believe that that 1/3 of 2022 has already passed by? โœˆ๏ธ
It seems like yesterday we were making New Year Resolutions!

Yeah, I know. I don't think mine lasted that long either. ๐Ÿ˜

That's okay, though. Because when you think about it...
January 1st is just a social construct and tomorrow can be as great a day to start off things again. ๐Ÿคฉ

How about we pick Korean learning back up again?

Slangs y'all! ๐Ÿฐ
What better way to dive back into Korean than by learning some slangs?
We've put together a little something to test your knowledge of slangs!
Korean Slang Test
Korean Expression of The Week! ๐Ÿฏ
Uhm... so... in english.. right?
We use.. like.. filler words... to... you know... uhh... fill in the... the.. what do you call it...  gaps, you know?

Same in Korean!

Some might consider it a bad habit and even grammatically incorrect, but I think it's useful in real life... Plus, I was never a big fan of textbooks so... Here we go:
Top 4 Filler Words that Every Korean in The World Uses
(Trust me, we took a poll at work and all 7 of them agreed.)

1. ์Œ ๐Ÿค”
This is your "Hmmm...." and can be used anywhere in the sentence to express uncertainty.
Or you can use these to buy some time until... hmmm... you find the right words!
This sound gives off a more pensive vibe than ์–ด.

๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ "์Œ.... ์šฐ๋ฆฌ... ๊ทธ๋ƒฅ ํฌ๊ธฐํ• ๊นŒ?" / "Hmm... should we... just give up?"

2. ์–ด ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
This is your "Uhhh.." and though very similar to ์Œ in its flexibility, it has a slightly more surprised tone to it. So if you've been caught off guard by something and need a second to think, you can use ์–ด... Don't worry. It doesn't sound as silly or offensive as the english "Uhhh".

๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ"๋„ˆ ๊ทธ๊ฑธ ๋ง์ด๋ผ๊ณ  ํ•ด?" / "Are you kidding me?"
๐Ÿ’๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ"์•„๋‹ˆ.. ๊ทธ๊ฒŒ ์•„๋‹ˆ๋ผ. ์–ด... ์‚ฌ์‹ค ๋‚˜ ํ™”์žฅ์‹ค ๊ฐ€์•ผ๋ผ...  /"No.. I mean... Hm.... Tbh, I have to go to the bathroom..."

3. ๊ทธ ๐Ÿ˜ฏ
This is the.. the.. watchamacallit...
Yup, so when you have a hard time remembering that, that... ๊ทธ... particular word, you can use ๊ทธ.
You can repeat it until you find the right word. ๊ทธ๊ทธ๊ทธ๊ทธ...

๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ "ํ˜น์‹œ ๊ทธ... ์–ด์ œ ๊ทธ... ๊ทธ๊ฑฐ ์ž˜๋ชป๋จน์–ด์„œ ๊ทธ๋Ÿฐ๊ฑฐ์•ผ?" / "Is it because you ate that... that... thing yesterday?

4. ๋ง‰ ๐Ÿ˜ฒ
This is the equivalent of the english "like".
It comes from the word ๋งˆ๊ตฌ which best translates to "recklessly or "strongly".
Now if you ask me why they would use that word as a filler, I would tell you that, like, I don't know.
Do you know why I just used "like" like that just now? Exactly.

๐Ÿ’๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ: "์‘... ๋‚˜ ๋ง‰ ์ง€๊ธˆ ์ฃฝ์„๊ฒƒ๊ฐ™์•„" / "Yeah.. I think I'm going to like die right now."

So there you have it. Something your textbooks won't teach ya!
