Showcase Artists 05 BBIRIBBOO ![]() BBIRIBBOO is a team founded on 2019 by two members(Kwon Solji and Son Saeha). All members have been playing the Piri together over 10 years through the Gugak National Middle School & High School, and Korea National University of Arts. Team name BBIRIBBOO was named because it sounds like ‘bboo’ when they blow the Piri, and they are creating a new traditional music of this era that is both sensuous and intuitive by considering and attempting a creative method that has not been tried. Under that direction, not only the Piri, Taepyeongso, and Saenghwang commonly played by the pirist, but also the tone of the synthesizer and Musical Instrument Digital Interface(MIDI), is creating a unique piece of BBIRIBBOO. "BBIRIBBOO Experiment I" Q1. How does BBIRIBBOO preserve the past? A1. "BBIRIBBOO accepts the long-established local music as a [the present progressive form]." There are two movements in preserving tradition. One is to preserve tradition completely, and the other is to create new music for this era through combination with new genres. Our music belongs to the latter. Tradition and the thing that will be tradition, we are in that boundary. It's gonna be a tradition, us in the boundary. The music we produce at this moment will be called 2000s traditional music in the distant future, so tradition includes all the music that continues to play today. Q2. How does BIRIBBOO live in the present? A2. "BIRIBBOO communicates with people through [traditional wind instruments]." For modern people, traditional music is just a thing of the past. What is the desirable behavior of a Gugak(which belongs to Korean traditional music) major in this era? Korean traditional music has a special energy compared to other Western music. Therefore, it is necessary for Gugak majors to make various creative attempts while considering these values, but to revive their unique characteristics without losing them. BIRIBBOO is trying to breathe with audiences by focusing on expanding the reference of 'traditional wind instruments music', which is away form them and has yet to express its value. Q3. How does the BIRIBBOO look to the future? A3. "BIRIBBOO wants to look like [Young artists who describe our traditions well in turbulent times] in the future." Music is natural to be rotten when it is stuck like a stagnant water. If it spreads into various branches, naturally mixes and be a thing helps people live their lives, we think it is truly the value of music. Therefore, BIRIBBOO will continue to produce music through collaborations with various genres, forgetting our hasty worries and fears about what results we will produce based on this idea. And we look forward to these works later becoming 'young artists who describe traditions in turbulent times in our own colors'. Showcase Artists 06 SANGJARU ![]() SANGJARU is a traditional music group formed by three graduates of the Korea National University of Arts – Korean Traditional Arts Center. Since the group formed in 2014, they have been following their musical journey to study and explore local rhythms, travelling around regions not only in Korea but also abroad. Rather than mimicking these culture and music of a specific region, they put their experience and perspectives made throughout their journey into their music to present SANGJARU’s original music which is free and new Korean modern music within the frame of unchanging tradition. "Sangjaru is a Korean music group who creates contemporary music out of the frame of unchanging tradition." Q1. How does Sangjaru preserve the past? A1. Sangjaru accepts the long-established local music as a [base]. Current Sangjaru focuses on the role of a bridge linking the past and the present. Previously, we certainly tried to 'preserve' the past, and those footsteps remained in the performance 'The Road to Sangjaru' and first regular album, but we are not focusing only on 'preservation' these days. However, the group's musical value revealed from the team name and a tradition that we have longed for and studied in line with the term 'traditional-based creation'. In other words, we aims for a complete foundation. In other words, we aim to at a complete foundation when we use old music. And this can be said to be the 'preservation of the past' of Sangjaru, which has not changed from before to now and will not change. Q2. How does Sangjaru live in the present? A2. "Sangjaru communicates with people through [sharing experiences]." We are trying to keep pace with the rapidly changing times. We don't try to fit our musical tendencies into the flow. However, we are trying to get a more sober evaluation. This should be passed on to the public who live with the flow of the times without favorable or hostile influence by the special word 'tradition'. In order for our music to be vital, it must be delivered first. Therefore, we are currently focusing on expanding, building, and promoting fandom by SNS(Social Networking Service) and MD, including 'Monthly Sangjaru', which releases new songs on YouTube every month. Q3. How does the Sangjaru look to the future? A3. Sangjaru wants to look like [artists who alive] in the future. We are focusing on the present rather than looking to the future. Recently, many markets have focused on the category 'tradition', but it is impossible to predict how long this interest will continue. However, we are actively trying to jump into the flow and make sure that our music is quickly and deeply in people's heads. Not as if we are watching a cloud or a mirage. Sangjaru's 'future' will depend on the 'look' of those who live in the present. We are only preparing and continuing to deliver the best music in our current position for the future.
