Solidarity Beyond Borders — Meeting a Cuban Doctor

To commemorate May 23, 1963 — the day Cuban medical internationalism officially began — the International Strategy Center and the Association of Physicians for Humanism held a Cuba solidarity event on May 27 in cooperation with the Cuban Embassy in South Korea. Participants watched the documentary “LEGADO: Vencedores de Dolor” and joined a discussion with Dr. Alfredo García Mirete, a Cuban oncologist currently working in Vietnam.

International Solidarity Signature Campaign for Cuba

The United States has recently escalated its aggression against Cuba, increasing military surveillance flights near Cuban territory and even indicting former Cuban President Raúl Castro on charges related to the alleged murder of U.S. citizens.

For nearly 70 years, Cuba has endured a relentless U.S. blockade. Yet the Cuban people continue to resist and defend their sovereignty and self-determination. ISC asks all people to stand in solidarity with Cuba so that it does not have to face this U.S. aggression alone.

Check out the carousel explaining 10 reasons why we stand with Cuba, and add your name to the international solidarity campaign through the link below.

This campaign is supported internationally by the Cuban Workers' Federation, the Latin America and Caribbean Regional Office of the World Federation of Trade Unions, and the International Workers Institute.

ISC’s Solidarity Project for Cuba

May 23 marks the official start of Cuba’s medical internationalism. In 1963, Cuban doctors went to tend to the wounded in Angola’s national liberation struggles. Since then, Cuba’s more than 600,000 doctors have helped millions of the poor and underserved all over the world. In 2006, U.S. President George W. Bush tried to undermine this Cuban medical solidarity by offering Cuban doctors and nurses permanent U.S. residency if they defected. Only 2 percent did.

President Donald Trump has been unable to subdue Iran and, looking for an easier target, has set his sights on Cuba. By blocking oil, Trump is squeezing the lifeblood of Cuba’s modern economy and deepening the hardships for Cubans. We must stand in solidarity with Cuba and oppose this campaign of economic pressure. Every failure to challenge Trump’s aggressions only serves to embolden him and U.S. imperialism further. The struggle against Trump will not be won in a single moment, but through continued concrete acts of resistance and solidarity.

Beginning this May, the ISC has launched a Cuba Solidarity Project. We are also raising funds to send solar panels to Cuba. We invite you to join and support this effort.

Solidarity with Palestine

Throughout May, ISC members participated in a series of actions in solidarity with Palestine.

On May 2, we joined a rally condemning the ongoing slaughter carried out by Israel against workers, children, parents, journalists, teachers, women, queer people, and ordinary civilians. On May 16, we participated in a special gathering marking the 78th anniversary of the Nakba.

The Nakba, or “Catastrophe,” refers to the mass displacement and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians that began in 1948 with the establishment of Israel. Since then, Israel has occupied 78 percent of historic Palestine while confining Palestinians to fragmented territories in Gaza and the West Bank, maintaining a system of colonial occupation and violence for decades.

On May 30, we joined a protest featuring activists who had sailed toward Gaza as part of a global flotilla and exposed the violence and torture they experienced at the hands of Israeli forces. Together, we denounced the Israeli state, the U.S. government, arms manufacturers, war profiteers, and the international actors complicit in these crimes.

In June, ISC will continue participating in campaigns demanding the arrest of war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu, the expulsion of the Israeli ambassador in South Korea, and an end to all cooperation with Israel.

If you would like to join our drum team during rallies and marches, please contact us through email or social media.

Commemorating the 10th Anniversary of the Gangnam Station Femicide

On May 17, ISC joined as a co-organizer of the commemoration marking the 10th anniversary of the Gangnam Station femicide.

The murder, committed simply because the victim was a woman, became a turning point in raising public awareness about gender-based violence in South Korea. Over the past decade, countless people have organized and struggled against structural sexism and gender discrimination.

ISC remains committed not only to remembrance but also to collective action aimed at ending violence against women.

Solidarity Beyond Borders — Meeting a Cuban Doctor

To commemorate the first overseas deployment of Cuban doctors, ISC and the Association of Physicians for Humanism, with support from the Cuban Embassy in Korea, screened the documentary “LEGADO: Vencedores de Dolor” and hosted an online discussion with Dr. Alfredo García Mirete, who is currently working at the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital.

ISC will continue organizing monthly activities in solidarity with the Cuban people, who continue to resist the U.S. economic blockade and threats of aggression. We invite you to join us in these ongoing efforts.

Seoul Women's Association Progressive Women's Policy Forum: The Role of Intervention in Addressing Violence Against Women

ISC has been conducting research with the Seoul Women's Association on international examples of workplace sexual harassment and sexual violence policies and procedures in public institutions.

The Seoul Women's Association has long emphasized the importance of transforming witnesses from passive bystanders into active interveners in both everyday life and cases of gender-based violence. As part of its Progressive Women's Policy Forum, titled “The Role of Intervention in Addressing Violence Against Women,” ISC contributed a presentation on international models of intervention and bystander engagement in responding to sexual violence.
