Inside People
How 2027 WUG will impact on Chungcheong
Secretary-General Mr. Yoon-suk Kim played a key role in leading the 2015 Gwangju Universiade to success. That is why Chungcheong appointed him as Secretary-General to lead the 2027 Chungcheong WUG bid committee to continue his great success.

From his experiences and as a witness, he believes that hosting 2027 Chungcheong WUG will be a great momentum to transform Chungcheong into Megacity. SG Kim kindly provide insight into the vision, sustainability, and legacy of Chungcheong Megacity 2027 WUG.

The VISION
SG Kim stresses the role of WUG is to serve as a catalyzer to the host region's social, economic, and welfare development. Currently, 'unbalanced development' has been a critical social issue in Korea due to the centralization of the capital area.

Chungcheong has planned to establish a ‘Megacity’ specializing in regional functions based on close cooperation among four cities and provinces. The Megacity will play a part in the solution for decentralization and balanced development.

A first step towards achieving this is to host the Chungcheong Megacity 2027 WUG. Four cities and provinces are working together to hold a ‘creative and innovative WUG.’ It will roll out urban infrastructure development, expansion and improvement of public sports, and community-based civic activities.

The SUSTAINABILITY
Innovation is a critical factor for the Chungcheong Megacity 2027 WUG. We aim to reach sustainable goals through an ‘innovative shift in thinking.’ We will focus on maximizing the use of existing competition venues through renovation and refurbishment. Further, it is also essential to be mindful to include other new sustainable platforms for future generations. For one, a new ‘future-proof’ venue will be created and dedicated to AR, VR, and XR.

However, the focus will not be restricted to venues but include all aspects of the event, such as competition management, transportation, accommodation, and environment. We will prioritize the reuse and improvement of the existing facilities, services, and systems.

The LEGACY
We witnessed a remarkable change in Gwangju citizens while preparing for the 2015 Gwangju Universiade. It instilled confidence in them that they could do it on an international stage. The 2027 WUG will be a turning point for Chungcheong. It will leave an incredible legacy, both tangible and intangible.

The 2027 WUG will lay a solid foundation for building sports in universities in the Chungcheong area. It will also elevate the sense of pride and membership of 5.5 million citizens in Chungcheong. During the 2027 WUG, university student-athletes from around the globe will become the leading champions of university sports innovation. Their pride, honor, and sportspersonship as athletes will earn them the respect that will be passed down as a truly remarkable legacy.

Please support Chungcheong’s challenge to host the 2027 WUG!
