9월 20일(토)부터 11월 1일(토)까지 부산 해운대구에 위치한 맥화랑에서 방정아 작가의 개인전이 진행됩니다.


1968년생 방정아 작가는 한국을 대표하는 리얼리즘 회화 작가로, 현대 사회의 구조적 모순과 개인이 직면한 불안정한 현실을 예리하게 포착합니다. 《물불 안 가리는 사람》이라는 타이틀로 진행되는 이번 개인전에서는 물과 불처럼 서로 대립하거나 모순되는 것들이 공존하는 오늘의 세계를 정면으로 마주한 방정아 작가의 신작을 만나볼 수 있습니다.


9월 20일 토요일 오후 3시에는 맥화랑에서 방정아 작가가 직접 출품작을 한 점 한 점 설명하고 작업에 대한 심도깊은 이야기를 나눌 수 있는 작가와의 만남 자리도 준비되어 있으니 관심있는 분들의 많은 참여 바랍니다.


From September 20 to November 1, Gallery MAC in Haeundae, Busan, will present a solo exhibition by artist Jeong-A Bang. Born in 1968, Jeong-A Bang is one of Korea’s leading realist painters, known for sharply capturing the structural contradictions of contemporary society and the precarious realities faced by individuals. Titled Water and Fire Alike, this exhibition showcases her latest works, confronting today’s world where opposing and contradictory elements coexist, much like water and fire. On Saturday, September 20 at 3 PM, Gallery MAC will also host an artist talk with Jeong-A Bang, offering visitors an opportunity to engage in an in-depth conversation about her artistic practice and works. 《물불 안 가리는 사람》

‘물도 좋고, 불도 좋다. 이것도 좋다, 저것도 좋다는 말인가.’
방정아 작가의 개인전 《물불 안 가리는 사람》의 작가노트 첫 줄에 놓인 이 문장은, 서로 다른 성질이 충돌하고 섞이는 지점에서 오늘의 삶을 읽어내는 작가의 시선을 보여준다. 이는 단순한 포용을 넘어 우리가 직면한 현실을 향한 비판적 질문이다.

국가 간 권력 관계, 불합리한 사회 구조, 여성의 권리와 인권, 기후 위기와 환경 문제, 핵 발전과 같은 첨예한 의제들은 개인의 삶에 깊숙이 스며들며, 동시에 해결하기 어려운 모순으로 다가온다. 무엇 하나만 선택할 수 없는 상황 속에서, 우리는 어떻게 살아야 하고 예술은 무엇을 해야 하는가. 《물불 안 가리는 사람》은 바로 이 질문에서 출발한다.

작가의 화면에는 서로 무관해 보이지만 묘하게 맞닿은 이미지들이 자리한다. 버스 창밖의 표범과 호피무늬 가방을 끌어안은 여자, 발끝을 파고드는 닥터피쉬와 무표정한 얼굴, 복숭아와 쪽파가 담긴 바구니처럼, 어긋나 보이는 사물과 존재들은 한 화면 안에 공존하며 낯설게 마주한다. 작가는 ‘물과 불’처럼 정반대의 성질을 가진 사물과 상황을 함께 붙잡고, 그것을 끝내 살아내는 인간의 태도에 주목한다. 익숙한 풍경 속에 드러난 균열과 이질적인 것들의 포용은 일상의 복잡한 감정과 사회적 긴장을 드러낸다. 이는 곧 우리 일상 속에 겹겹이 얽힌 모순―삶과 죽음, 권력과 약자, 자연과 인간―을 비추는 은유다.

이번 전시에서는 캔버스 회화와 더불어 실험적 작업을 선보인다. 목화솜 이불 속통을 펼쳐 제작한 대형 솜 작업, 전통 한복 천 위에 채색된 작품들은 사적 기억과 물질의 층위를 새로운 표면으로 변형한다. 이는 방정아 작가가 오랫동안 탐구해온 리얼리즘적 시선과 사회적 비평을 확장하는 동시에, 규격화된 사각 프레임을 넘어서는 회화의 또 다른 가능성을 제시한다.

《물불 안 가리는 사람》은 결국, 선택을 강요받는 세계 속에서 ‘무엇이든 해야만 하는’ 우리의 처지를 드러낸다. 물과 불, 대립과 모순을 가리지 않고 껴안는 행위는 불편한 공존의 현장을 드러내며, 예술은 그 산만하고도 파편적인 현실을 관통하는 질문이 된다. 방정아 작가의 작업은 관람객에게 흩어진 조각들을 스스로 꿰어내고, 삶과 사회를 다시 성찰하도록 이끈다.

《Water and Fire Alike》

“Water is fine, and fire is fine. Does this mean both this and that are acceptable?”The opening line of Jeong-A Bang’s artist note for her solo exhibition 《Water and Fire Alike》 reveals the artist’s gaze at life, found at the point where opposing properties collide and intermingle. It is not a gesture of simple inclusivity, but a critical question directed at the reality we face today.

Issues such as power relations between nations, unjust social structures, women’s rights and human dignity, the climate crisis and environmental degradation, and nuclear power are deeply entangled with individual lives while simultaneously confronting us as irresolvable contradictions. In situations where no single choice is possible, how should we live, and what role can art play? 《Water and Fire Alike》 begins with this question.

On Bang’s canvas, images that appear unrelated are strangely intertwined. A woman embracing a leopard-patterned bag while a leopard passes by outside the bus window; a blank face as doctor fish nibble at her toes; baskets filled with peaches and scallions—such incongruous objects and beings coexist within the same frame, meeting each other in estrangement. The artist focuses on the human attitude of holding together situations and things as opposite as “water and fire,” enduring them to the end. Familiar landscapes fractured by subtle fissures, and scenes that embrace the heterogeneous, expose the tangled emotions and social tensions of daily life. They become metaphors for the contradictions layered throughout our existence—life and death, power and vulnerability, nature and humanity.

Alongside paintings on canvas, this exhibition also presents Bang’s experimental works. Large-scale pieces made from dismantled cotton quilt linings, and works painted on traditional hanbokfabric, transform personal memory and material layers into new surfaces. These works extend Bang’s longstanding realist perspective and social critique, while proposing another possibility for painting beyond the conventional rectangular frame.

Ultimately, 《Water and Fire Alike》 illuminates our condition in a world that forces choices upon us, where we nevertheless feel compelled to “do something.” To embrace both water and fire, conflict and contradiction alike, is to reveal the uneasy reality of coexistence. Here, art becomes a question that cuts through a fragmented and chaotic world. Jeong-A Bang’s work invites viewers to weave together these scattered fragments and to reflect anew on their own lives and society.

[작가노트] 물불 안 가리는 사람

물도 좋다. 불도 좋다.
이것도 좋다. 저것도 좋다는 말인가.
어떠한 상황이라도 개의치 않고 덤빈다?
사실 지금 우리가 살아가는 처지로는,
무엇이든 방법을 찾아야 하는 지구인의 입장으로는,
한가하게 상황과 처지를 따지기 어렵다.
뭐라도 해야 할 것 같은데.
예술도 뭔가 해야 할 것 같은데.
찾아 헤매고 있다. 끝없이.

이번 개인전은 <물불 안 가리는 사람>이라는 제목아래 작품들을 준비했다.
큰 틀 안에서 봐 주셨으면 한다.
언뜻 보면 맥락도 안 맞고 산만하기 짝이 없다.
나의 작업 방식 자체가 그러해서 도저히 일관된 하나의 맥락에서 작업을 풀 수 없었다.
보는 분들이 잘 꿰어 주시길 바랄 뿐이다.

20대 여자들의 이야기, 심리적 투사 행위, 객체 지향 존재론, 죽음과 삶 등의 이야기를 담았다.
나의 작업에서 늘 그렇듯 거대한 이야기를 품고 있지만
내가 밝혀 낸 이미지들은 거대한 이야기는 아니다.

몇 년 전부터 사각 프레임을 버리기 시작했다.
반투명 등 각종 천들의 레이어를 겹침으로써 불규칙한 모양의 작업을 하고 있다.
올해에는 솜을 대형으로 펼쳐 이미지를 담아 보았다.
이번 전시에는 대형 솜 작업을 부산에서 처음 보여드리게 되어 의미 있게 생각한다.
