Catherine Chinchiroca
Directora del Seorae Global Village Center

PROGRAMS & ACTIVITIES
From Page to Planet: Korean Literature in the Age of Climate Change
Unpacking climate themes and bridging cultures, redefining our relationshop with the natural world
In collaboration with the Literature Translation Institute of Korea and Dulwich College Seoul, Seorae Global Village Center is pleased to present From Page to Planet: Korean Literature in the Age of Climate Change on June 5, 2026, in celebration of World Environment Day.

This special event will feature award-winning writer and translator Paige Aniyah Morris in a thought-provoking conversation exploring how contemporary Korean literature engages with climate and environmental issues. Through the works of acclaimed authors including Han Kang, whose writing Morris has translated, the program will examine how storytelling and translation can deepen our understanding of humanity’s evolving relationship with the natural world while building cultural connections across borders.

Paige Aniyah Morris holds BAs in Ethnic Studies and Literary Arts with Honors from Brown University and an MFA in Creative Writing from Rutgers University. A recipient of awards from the Daesan Foundation, the American Literary Translators Association, the Fulbright Program, and more, she has translated works by Pak Kyongni, Han Kang, Heuijung Hur, and many others.

The evening will include a talk, audience discussion, and Q&A session on literature, translation, and environmental storytelling. The event is open to all, including high school students interested in literature, translation, and environmental topics. Attendees are also welcome to bring copies of Morris’s translated works for a book signing following the program. Advance reservation is required.

Korean Cooking Class
For this month’s Korean cooking class, we will be making two delicious seasonal dishes: ê°„ìž„ ìˆêŸžëŻž ëł¶ìŒ (soy sauce stir-fried webfoot octopus) and 감자채전 (shredded potato pancake).
June is the best season to enjoy ìˆêŸžëŻž (webfoot octopus) in Korea, when it is especially tender and flavorful. Usually, Koreans prepare this dish with a spicy gochugaru-based sauce, but this time we will make a milder and deeply savory soy sauce version that everyone can enjoy. The sweet and salty flavors pair perfectly with fresh vegetables and tender octopus.
Alongside it, we will make 감자채전, a crispy shredded potato pancake with a wonderful texture, golden on the outside and soft inside. It is simple, comforting, and a favorite Korean side dish to share at the table.
Join us for a cozy cooking session as we explore comforting Korean flavors and seasonal ingredients together.

The Girl Who Wrote Loneliness
The Girl Who Wrote Loneliness is a reflective coming-of-age novel set during South Korea’s rapid industrialization in the 1970s. The story follows a teenage girl who leaves her rural hometown to work in a factory in Seoul while attending night school and dreaming of becoming a writer. Through her difficult daily life, the novel captures the loneliness, exhaustion, and emotional struggles faced by young factory workers of the time. As the narrator looks back on her youth, she reflects on friendship, poverty, guilt, and the sacrifices made in pursuit of a better future. Written in a poetic and intimate style, the novel is both a personal story and a portrait of a changing Korean society.

The Seorae Global Village Center is part of a network of information and welcome centers for foreigners located in neighborhoods across Seoul where many foreign residents tend to reside. The opening of these centers was an initiative of the city of Seoul in 2008 with the mission to provide practical information about living in Korea so that foreign residents find the day-to-day management easy. Our primary role is to answer questions that pertain to daily life and to help manage situations where the language barrier becomes an issue.
You will find at the center Korean language programs as well as other cultural and artistic lessons to learn and appreciate the multiple facts of the Korean culture. We hope that this will help you create new encounters and discoveries.
