ASEZ Held a Coastal Cleanup at a Historic Site in Viejo

In December 2024, 50 ASEZ members in Panama gathered along the Viejo Coast, Panama, a significant area designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This historical site represents the origins of Panama City and embodies the historical and cultural identity of Panama. However, with the recent rise in tourists, the site has faced environmental challenges due to single-use plastics and other wastes left by visitors. These pollutants not only affect the historic site itself but also pose a threat to nearby natural ecosystems, including rivers and mangrove forests.

The Plastic Age

The term “Plastic Age” aptly characterizes modern civilization, highlighting plastic as a pivotal material in modern society. Much like the Stone Age and Iron Age marked significant stages in human advancement, the prevalence of plastic serves as a symbolic marker of human activity in this era. Plastic artifacts used today could one day become archaeological relics, chronicling the legacy of our time.
