Studying English is a necessity for most Koreans. Since English is also viewed as a sign of social status and as a means to gain social prestige and financial success, more and more Koreans try a variety of ways to improve their English skill.
영어 공부는 대부분의 한국인에게 필수입니다. 영어는 사회적 지위의 표시이자 사회적 명성과 경제적 성공을 위한 수단으로 여겨지기 때문에 점점 더 많은 한국인이 영어 실력을 향상시키기 위해 다양한 방법을 시도하고 있습니다.

Way back in 2007, when I first tried my hand at teaching English, I didn’t know how valuable possessing a good command of it was. I just simply thought that the students that I met in the academy where I taught only learned it because they only wanted to. But upon meeting hundreds of students and listening to their goals and dreams, I fully realized how necessary it is to have fluency in English. I was often asked by my students what the best and fastest way to improve English skill was. Though I fully believe that there is no such thing as one-size fits all, all the years of my teaching experience make me believe that constant exposure, correct practice and written corrections or notes are important factors that help an English learner improve fluency. 

2007년에 처음 영어를 가르치기 시작했을 때만 해도 영어를 잘하는 것이 얼마나 가치 있는 일인지 몰랐습니다. 제가 가르치던 학원에서 만난 학생들은 그저 영어를 배우고 싶어서 배우는 것이라고만 생각했죠. 하지만 수백 명의 학생들을 만나고 그들의 목표와 꿈을 들으면서 영어를 유창하게 구사하는 것이 얼마나 필수적인 건지 깨달았습니다. 저는 학생들에게 영어 실력을 향상시키는 가장 빠르고 좋은 방법이 무엇이냐는 질문을 자주 받았습니다. 저는 만능통치약은 없다는 것을 전적으로 믿지만, 다년간의 교육 경험을 통해 지속적인 노출, 올바른 연습, 첨삭이나 메모가 영어 학습자의 유창성 향상에 도움이 되는 중요한 요소라고 믿게 되었습니다.

Constant exposure for me means - you breathe, eat and live with English. It doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to live in an English-speaking country. When you expose yourself to English every day, you see, hear and speak it. So, ‘how do you do this?’, you may ask. The answer is simple and the resources can be found just around. 

영어에 지속적으로 노출된다는 것은 영어와 함께 숨 쉬고, 먹고, 생활한다는 것을 의미합니다. 반드시 영어권 국가에 살아야 한다는 의미는 아닙니다. 매일 영어에 노출되면 영어를 보고, 듣고, 말하게 됩니다. 그렇다면 '어떻게 해야 하나요?"라고 질문할 수 있습니다. 답은 간단하며 주변에서 쉽게 찾을 수 있는 리소스입니다.

Find an audio or video file that you can listen to or watch – the one that doesn’t bore you. It may be a podcast in English, an English drama series or sitcom or a movie. Do not simply listen or watch them. Instead, use subtitles or closed captions, take notes of the expressions that are used and make sure to understand and how to use them. Find the best speaking role model. This is the advice that I got from my English trainor before. Find someone whom you can follow well. Watch or listen to how they speak - their pronunciation and accent. Practice in front of a mirror and never be shy to practice with your English tutor. Find someone that you are comfortable having a lesson with and always be curious – don’t hesitate to ask questions. If in doubt, always ask for an explanation. 

듣거나 볼 수 있는 오디오 또는 비디오 파일 중 지루하지 않은 것을 찾아보세요. 영어 팟캐스트, 영어 드라마 시리즈, 시트콤, 영화 등이 될 수 있습니다. 단순히 듣거나 시청하지 마세요. 대신 자막이나 클로즈드 캡션을 사용하고, 사용된 표현을 메모하고, 그 표현을 이해하고 어떻게 사용하는지 확인하세요. 최고의 말하기 롤모델을 찾아보세요. 이것은 제가 예전에 영어 트레이너로부터 받은 조언입니다. 잘 따라할 수 있는 사람을 찾아보세요. 그들이 말하는 방식, 즉 발음과 억양을 보거나 들어보세요. 거울 앞에서 연습하고 영어 튜터와 함께 연습하는 것을 부끄러워하지 마세요. 편안하게 레슨을 받을 수 있는 사람을 찾고 항상 호기심을 갖고 주저하지 말고 질문하세요. 모르는 것이 있으면 언제든지 설명을 요청하세요.

Finally, written corrections are something that a student can look back on. I personally believe that when the corrections are written, retention rate is also high. When you review, write some notes down. It sounds like a lot of hard work, but it will definitely pay off. And… don’t forget to enjoy learning! 

마지막으로, 서면 첨삭은 학생이 되돌아볼 수 있는 부분입니다. 저는 개인적으로 첨삭을 서면으로 작성하면 유지율도 높다고 생각합니다. 복습할 때는 몇 가지 메모를 하세요. 많은 노력이 필요하겠지만 분명 보람이 있을 것입니다. 그리고... 배우는 것을 즐기는 것을 잊지 마세요!
