Towards a Leap in the International Solidarity Movement |
As we wrap up the first half of 2022 and prepare for the second half, the ISC wants to work with you to take a leap forward in the international solidarity movement.
To expand our capacity, the ISC will keep studying.
To find a way forward, we need to keep studying to understand and analyze today’s reality. Rather than study in isolation, we must study and discuss together to form the basis for common action. Thus, the ISC is planning to create study groups with you on topics such as politics, economy, history, philosophy.
To change society, the ISC will put knowledge into action.
If the knowledge we acquire ends in us, our vision for a better society will never be realized. We can only make a difference when we put our knowledge into practice. Thus, we will create a space for action and discussion in our daily lives and ISC activities.
To develop power and influence for social change, the ISC will keep expanding our membership through greater solidarity activities.
To make change, we need greater power and influence. Our power and influence grows as more and more of us share a common vision we are willing to fight for and build. If you are interested in the ISC’s activities, please support us as a member. |
US abortion rights struck down: what now? |
Photo: the Party for Socialism and Liberation |
On Friday, June 24, the United States Supreme Court struck down the historic 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling, robbing women in the US of the federally protected right to an abortion.
For the first time in almost 50 years, access to an abortion is no longer protected by nationwide law. The ruling permits the right-wing lawmakers that control several states, with populations of hundreds of millions combined, many of whom are Black, Latino, or other racially marginalized people, to eviscerate abortion rights.
“It’s turning the clock back 50 years. Bodily autonomy, how can women be equal in society if we don’t have control over their own bodies?” decades-long abortion rights activist Joyce Chediac told Peoples Dispatch, regarding the Supreme Court’s decision.
Abortion access was always uneven state by state, but with many “trigger laws” and pre-existing abortion bans effective immediately in several states, the disparity has deepened.

Celebration for the 43rd Anniversary of the Triumph
of the Sandinista Revolution
|
On July 9th, the International Strategy Center participated in the 43rd Commemoration of the Sandinista Revolution, hosted by the Nicaraguan Embassy in the Republic of Korea. This was a few days ahead of the official Nicaraguan Day of Revolution anniversary on July 19th, when the revolution’s victory in 1979 brought the Sandinistas into power. Upon coming into power, the Sandinista government implemented widespread programs and services for literacy and gender equality and have continued changing society through free education, free health care, and programs to eradicate poverty. |
ISC Book Club 2:
A Disability History of the United States
|
The ISC’s bookclub on “‘A Disability History of the United States” studies and discusses the history of discrimination and struggle in Korea and the United States. In our first online and offline meeting on July 9, we looked into how, in North America, the meaning of disability changed from that of indigenous communities to that of the late 1800s; and how, in South Korea, the disability movement fought against discrimination from 1960s to 1990s. Our next meeting will be on July 30. |
ISC at the 23rd 2022 Seoul Queer Parade
|
On July 16, the International Strategy Center participated on the 23rd Seoul Queer Parade at Seoul Plaza. We created pickets with quotes and photos of queer and trans organizers and activists from around the world. Despite the unexpected downpour and being surrounded by anti-Queer Parade demonstrations, ISC members came out to express solidarity with the LGBTQ+ movement. |
2022 ISC Members Political School
|
ISC opens a members political school twice a year. In our first school, we shared and discussed the current state and tasks for the international solidarity and Korean social movements, and the ISC's vision. It was a space for all the members to gather our energies as we ready to passionately move forward in the second half of 2022. |
