๐The American Nerd: From Bully Victim to Billionaire
๋ฏธ๊ตญ์ ๋๋: ๊ดด๋กญํ๋นํ๋ ์์ด์์ ์ต๋ง์ฅ์๋ก
For much of Americaโs history, being a nerd was an insult. It didnโt just mean you were smart. It meant you spent all your time studying, had no friends (especially no girlfriends), had no sense of fashion, and probably wore glasses. If you watch movies from the โ80s, โ90s, and early 2000s, youโll see this stereotype everywhere: nerds were the kids who got bullied.

That said, my brothers and I loved watching movies about nerds overcoming their bullies and becoming strong, competent, and popular. Looking back, I think we liked the idea that the kids everyone underestimated could eventually prove everyone wrong.

And then something funny happened: nerds started ruling the world. With the rise of personal computers and the internet, people like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, and Mark Zuckerberg turned being obsessed with technology into a path to enormous success. Suddenly, being a nerd didnโt seem so bad.

These days, if someone calls you a nerd, you can often laugh it off as a compliment. Thereโs even a classic comeback: โSomeday, this nerd might be your boss.โ

Of course, being smart or successful doesnโt replace the importance of getting along with other people. But I think itโs great that our idea of what makes someone โcoolโ has expanded. Maybe the nerds didnโt change as much as we did.
