Desember 2023

New Year's messages

As we wrap up 2023, we would like to express our gratitude to everyone who participated in and supported the activities of the ISC throughout the year. Thanks to your involvement and support, the ISC was able to carry out various activities this year. In a world where various crises of capitalism- economic, climate, and war -are intensifying, this year has also been marked by increased attacks on social movements as well.

In South Korea, the government under President Yoon Suk-yeol has consistently suppressed workers and civil society, while globally, attacks on social movements resisting the establishment can be readily observed. From shaping dominant discourses through mainstream media with significant financial power to detaining activists and, in extreme cases, even assassinating leaders of social movements, the repression has become severe.

This year has been a challenging time for people's lives and social movements, emphasizing the urgency to intensify our activities. Throughout the year, the ISC continued our efforts to expose the crises of capitalism, expand activities to discover alternatives, organize forums addressing economic, climate, and war crises, connect with activists in various fields, and produce articles, videos, and translated content to share these issues with the public.

The outlook for 2024 suggests that it will be even more challenging than the past year. The crises that intensified this year are expected to continue, and solutions to these crises are still not easily apparent. However, with the active engagement of many people domestically and internationally who continue to work fervently to address these issues, and with the support of those who join and endorse such activities, the flame of hope continues.

In 2024, the ISC aims to safeguard and nurture this flame. I invite you all to join us in this endeavor.

Thank you.

 End Year Party

On December 2, the ISC held our year-end party. It was a fun and happy event. We would like to thank everyone who came out. Thanks also to the love, energy, and passion of our members and friends who made 2023. Stay tuned for 2024!

Palestinian Solidarity Emergency Action

In December, the Center for International Strategic Studies participated in solidarity actions for Palestine that continued despite the cold weather.

On December 10, we participated with our members in the 4th Solidarity Rally to demand the liberation of Palestine and an immediate ceasefire. On December 18, we held a one-person demonstration in front of the Israeli embassy, and on December 24, we participated in the rally, "Israel Stop the Massacre! The bombings and massacres are happening again, and the international community must continue to act. We look forward to your participation in the 6th Emergency Action for Peace and the Liberation of Palestine on January 7, 2024.

The International Strategy Center will continue to stand with you to end the Israeli occupation and bring peace to Palestine.

[Film Screening]
TALE OF THE THREE JEWELS

On December 14, Films for Freedom, the International Strategy Center, and the Seoul Womens Association screened the film, Tale of the Three Jewels.

The director, Michel Khleifi, set the film around the time of the First Intifada and was one of the few movies to be filmed in Gaza. After the film, a discussion was held on how the film affected our outlook on Israel’s brutal occupation of Palestine. Several people felt Khleifi’s use of magical realism showed how the Israeli apartheid regime has made a trip to one’s hometown into a fantasy for most Palestinians, while others saw the film as a form of resistance against Israel’s erasure of Palestinian culture, but most acknowledged that very little has changed since the time the film was first released.

At the very end, the organizers notified attendees of the next Palestinian solidarity rallies and which businesses BDS has called for boycotts on. Around forty people attended the screening and together we raised $643.88 to Pal.Gaza, a community led project to provide aid to poor families in Gaza. Thanks to everyone who joined us for the screening.
