Interview with Ian Goldin, Professor at Oxford
‘The current society is an era of “entanglement” beyond “connectivity”’
On September 9th, two researchers in charge of national capabilities research at Taejae Future Consensus Institute met with Professor Ian Goldin of Oxford University. The meeting addressed the crucial topic: ‘Making the Right Choices for Humanity's Future.’

Professor Goldin, a leading authority on globalization and development, is the founding director of the Oxford Martin School, a research institute dedicated to finding solutions to pressing social problems. His distinguished career includes serving as a former vice-president of the World Bank.
Professor Goldin's research explores a shift from “connectivity” to “entanglement” in our global society, highlighting how we are deeply intertwined in a complex knot that’s impossible to escape.
While our hyperconnected society has brought innovation and prosperity, it has also eroded the sense of ‘neighborhood.’ He emphasizes the importance of community in rebuilding sustainable prosperity and asserts that ‘the city’ is a key unit in addressing the multiple crises humanity faces.

Taejae FCI presents a special video series, “AI and the Civilizational Revolution.”
Professor Yong Hak Kim, a sociologist and pioneer of social network research in Korea (former president of Yonsei University), refers to the emergence of AI as a “civilizational revolution.” This is because the recent rapid development of AI is seen as a civilizational change that goes beyond the scope of the industrial revolution.
In this series, Taejae, together with Professor Kim, aims to examine the development of AI from a civilizational perspective that includes social mechanisms.
In Part 1, we delve into the sociological implications of AI, focusing on its emergent capability and controllability, beyond its function as a mere tool. |
|
|
In Part 2, the discussion expands to the broader human society, examining the sociological factors of AI that trigger community division and the crisis of democracy. We also explore how we can maintain human identity and social communities as we navigate the AI era. |
