Tommorrow is a national commemoration day for the May 18th Democratization Movement, which happened 43 years ago, and during which countless civilians and citizens lost their lives to stand up for democracy, human rights and peace. The Movement played a pivotal role in the democratization process of the Republic of Korea, even though for many years it was discarded as a historical event. Human Rights City Gwangju, having such a painful history of state violence, continues to protect and promote the human rights of citizens.

Ten days of the May 18th Democratization Movement

“The May 18 Democratic Uprising was a great turning point for Korea’s democracy. It has also greatly influenced a lot of East Asian countries to bring down the cold war system and achieve democracy”

The 43rd Anniversary Events of the May 18 Democratization Movement

Various events will straddle across Gwangju to commemorate the 43rd anniversary of the May 18 Gwangju Democratic Movement under the slogan of "Honor the Spirit of May 18 as Justice for Today!" What is meant by the slogan is to inherit the defiance and community spirits of the Gwangju citizens who feared no death in their desperate quest for democracy. It also means pursuing peace and unification on the Korean Peninsula and pulling forward democracy, fairness, and justice in our society. These events aim to find the truth about the Democratic Movement, inherit the spirits of the protestors, and promote the quest for peace and unification on the Korean Peninsula on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the armistice agreement.
