WHRCF NEWSLETTER - JULY ✉️
Summer in Korea is notoriously hot and humid, and one of the ways to deal with such weather is to go either hiking or do water activities as it’s also the vacation season for most people. As dates are getting closer by each day, we at the Secretariat continue to work towards the successful Forum this year.
💡Forum News

The 12th WHRCF COMING SOON!

We have finalized the main program of our Forum. This year we have decided to focus a little more on the climate change, which in a span of several years became one of the urgent issues the humanity must face immediately. Together with our partners we’re preparing to launch Plenary Session 1 with the theme “Human Rights-Based Approach to Mitigating and Countering Climate Change – Local Solutions to a Global Problem” and Plenary Session 2 focusing on “Climate Justice at the Heart of Inclusive and Sustainable Cities”. In total, there will be forty sessions and programs including seven Thematic Sessions, twelve Special Sessions and many more.

We will share more information both through our monthly newsletter and homepage, so stay tuned and we look forward to meeting you in person this year.

The Fourth Meeting of International Steering Committee
The International Steering Committee Meeting was held on June 30 and the main agenda covered the discussion about main invited speakers, as well as the topic of the Forum’s Declaration and ways to connect to 2022 UCLG World Congress to be held in Daejeon.

UNESCO Master Class Gwangju Series

UNESCO Master Class Gwangju Series, co-hosted by the Gwangju International Center, UNESCO, and Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education, will be held for the first time in Gwangju this August. Unlike the previous Master Classes, which were held as one-day events, the Gwangju Series will last for two months and consists of diverse programs with the ultimate goal of providing opportunity for the youth to understand the basic mechanisms of racism and discrimination, as well as to explore discrimination related issues in Korea with domestic and foreign experts, and share their unique solutions to them.

💡Human Rights Issues
July 18, Nelson Mandela International Day

In 2009, the UN General Assembly declared July 18 as “Nelson Mandela International Day” to commemorate valuable contributions by the former South African President to peace and freedom.

In 2015, the scope of Nelson Mandela International Day was broadened to touch upon the rights of groups deprived of their liberty. The UN General Assembly adopted the revised United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, which became known as “Nelson Mandela Rules.”

"I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die".

- Nelson Mandela during his Rivonia Trial in South Africa in 1964
