Today we have news from one of the hottest company right now, Anthropic! Founded by the siblings Dario & Daniela Amodei in 2021, this startup has formed a strong partnership with Google. Just last week, they secured a $100 million investment from the Korean telecommunications company SK Telecom.
Anthropic is providing a large language model (LLM) named 'Claude' and a chatbot service under the same name. They unveiled an even more powerful model, 'Claude 2,' last July.
In this letter, we'll take a brief look at Anthropic's co-founders, the chatbot Claude, and their partnership. Isn't this exciting? :)

According to Wikipedia, the co-founders of Anthropic include Dario Amodei, Daniela Amodei, Jack Clark, and Jared Kaplan, all of whom hail from OpenAI. CEO Dario Amodei previously served as the Vice President of Research at Baidu and Google, while his sister Daniela Amodei held the role of Vice President of Safety Policy at OpenAI.
According to Financial Times, the Amodei siblings resigned from OpenAI in 2019 due to disagreements over its commercialization process when the company received a $1 billion investment from Microsoft. They then founded Anthropic.
*OpenAI began as a non-profit artificial intelligence research company in 2015. However, in 2019, to secure computing resources and recruit talent, they established a subsidiary called OpenAI LP and renamed the original corporation OpenAI Nonprofit.
Most of the references to OpenAI in various articles and blogs today actually refer to 'OpenAI LP.' However, OpenAI LP does have a profit cap, and any revenue beyond that amount is owned by the non-profit organization, OpenAI Nonprofit.
"But any returns beyond that amount are owned by the original OpenAI Nonprofit entity 'OpenAI LP', 2019.03.11”

In contrast, Anthropic is currently registered as a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC) in California. While related laws vary by state in the U.S., a PBC does not define its corporate mission solely in terms of maximizing shareholder value. This Public Benefit Corporation structure ensures that the company must consider public interests other than profit, thus preventing shareholders from using a decrease in stock value as grounds for dismissal or lawsuits against the company.
This past May, they released the principles that their AI models must adhere to, called the 'Claude Constitution.' The term 'Constitutional' was used to guide the AI models in normative behavior at a higher level.
Anthropic stated that the "Claude Constitution was influenced by global platform guidelines, such as the UN Human Rights Declaration and Apple's service terms."

Anthropic's 'Claude 2' model, unveiled in July, features an input-output prompt with a maximum token count of 100,000, about three times the size of the GPT-4-32K model (32,768 tokens). In English, 100,000 tokens translate to approximately 75,000 words.
This means the model can handle technical documents spanning hundreds of pages or even an entire book in one go. Considering that most AI-based document translation and summarization services currently impose strong size limitations, this appears to be a clear advantage from a user perspective.
A higher token count is also valuable for more specialized tasks. Quinn Slack, the CEO and Co-founder of the AI code platform Sourcegraph, said, "When it comes to AI coding, devs need fast and reliable access to context about their unique codebase and a powerful LLM with a large context window and strong general reasoning capabilities"

Anthropic is expanding partnerships with corporations under the banner of "Trustworthy AI." Key partners include collaboration solution companies like Slack, Notion, and Zoom. In February, Google's cloud business invested $300 million in Anthropic, securing 10% equity and supplying computing resources.
The partnership with SK Telecom involves not only investment but also business collaboration. Both companies plan to develop multilingual models that can be applied to customer service, marketing, sales, and interactive consumer applications, with the goal of creating custom LLMs for telecommunications providers.
The overall business roadmap is overseen by Jared Kaplan, a GPT-3 developer and co-founder of Anthropic. The jointly developed LLM will be offered to other companies through SK Telecom, in conjunction with Anthropic's Claude model.
“We are pleased to announce that SK Telecom has become a commercial partner with Anthropic as well as a strategic investor," Anthropic stated.
What an exciting alliance, and promising advances! Stay tuned for more on this ever-evolving story! :)
