Just last month, Chungcheong Megacity 2027 World University Games Bid Committee (2027CMBC) successfully finished a technical inspection made by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), with confidence that the goddess of victory will cast a vote for Chungcheong on the election day.

The newsletter, usually published on the 20th of every month, is brought to you a little later this time to include news stories on the FISU evaluation visit and the atmosphere here in Chungcheong welcoming the FISU committee.

Highlight: Interview with Yoon-suk KIM, Secretary-General of 2027CMBC

Only Chungcheong is ready:
sufficient budget, a welcoming atmosphere, and successful Universiade experiences

August 3rd was a day of excitement and cheer for all citizens of Chungcheong and 2027CMBC. The Ministry of Economy and Finance of the Republic of Korea notified the approval of the Chungcheong Megacity 2027 WUG through deliberation by the International Event Review Committee. “The approval means that the central Korean government has recognized the necessity and appropriateness of hosting the 2027 Summer World University Games in Chungcheong and that the 2027 Games will become an official project carried out by the Korean government if awarded the Games. It also signifies that all domestic approval processes, which have been carried out since April last year, are finally ended,” explained secretary-general of 2027CMBC Yoon-suk Kim.

The Korean government approved approximately 440 million Euros (448 million USD) for the 2027 WUG. Of this, 80 percent budget comes from the central and local governments, and the remaining 20 percent is sourced from the sponsors and Games profits, including ticket sales and participation fees. The 448 million USD budget accounts for the direct expenses required for the Games operation. The construction of road networks, facilities, and the FISU Games village will be carried out separately as part of the national project. In particular, the Games village development plan with 3,500 apartment units has already been confirmed. Like the 2015 Gwangju Summer Universiade, the Games village, which will be built into new apartment complexes, will create a new, eco-responsible, functional neighborhood to be left behind for the Chungcheong community after the Games are over.

What determines the stability of a mega-scale international event organization is money. To put it straightforwardly, no money, no Games, said secretary-general Yoon-suk Kim. He added, “With this final approval from the Ministry of Economy and Finance, we can say that all preparations for the 2027 WUG are complete.”

Securing the Games sponsorship is also promising as the global giants, including Samsung, LG, and Hyundai, are very likely to participate in the sponsorship programme. In fact, 36 Korean companies joined the sponsorship and suppliership programmes of the 2015 Gwangju Summer Universiade, which contributed to the successful operation of the Games.

Another clear advantage Chungcheong has over the other host and candidate cities is Korea’s easy entry procedure into the country while providing the highest security, safety, and convenience. Kim said, “Unfortunately, there are many cases where athletes had to withdraw their participation from the Games due to visa issues. Chungcheong and Korea are ready to help and encourage the participation of athletes from many countries across the globe and connect students around the world through sport.”

In addition, sectary-general Kim pointed out the strength of team 2027CMBC. 2027CMBC is composed of experts who understand the value of University Sport and World University Games having organized the 2015 Gwangju Summer Universiade, the legendary World University Games that recorded the low-cost and high-efficiency Games ever. He emphasized, “We have the DNA of success, and we have the ability to cope with and solve unpredictable obstacles that may come along the way. I assure you that the 2027 Summer World University Games will emerge as a new legend in Chungcheong.”

Bidding Progress

Chungcheong Megacity impresses the FISU Games Summer inspection team

"Thank you very much for the warm welcome here. Your bid for hosting FISU World University Games 2027 is another milestone in the long history between Korea and FISU.

We have seen all your preparations for the bid. We have read the report from our technical committee who was here weeks ago, and saw how enthusiastic and dedicated you prepared your bid. I wish you all the best and thank you for all you did in the past and what you will deliver in the future," said acting president Leonz Eder to express his gratitude on behalf of the FISU evaluation committee.

Following the FISU technical visit last month, the FISU evaluation committee composed of acting president Leonz Eder, vice president Marian Dymalski, secretary general-CEO Eric Saintrond, and director of FISU Summer Games Jing Zhao arrived in Chungcheong on August 26. Welcoming banners and placards added a warm festive atmosphere to the Chungcheong streets.

In a token of appreciation for their visit, 2027CMBC prepared a very meaningful gift - a lacquer box and a scroll inscribed with one million signatures of Chungcheong citizens who gave their names in support of the bid. The FISU student committee member Kyung-eun Lee and FISU student ambassador Min-joo Kim presented the gift to the acting president Leonz Eder. As of August 22, 1.4 million people have given their signatures, far exceeding the targeted one million signatures. It shows the Korean people's aspiration to host the 2027 WUG.

On the same day, the mayor of Daejeon Metropolitan City Jang-woo Lee, mayor of Sejong City Min-ho Choi, Chungcheongbuk-do Province governor Young-hwan Kim, and Chungcheongnam-do Province vice governor Pil-young Lee greeted the delegation at the welcome dinner. Vice president of the Korean Sports and Olympic Committee Byong-jin You and secretary-general of 2027CMBC Yoon-suk Kim were also present.

For the following two days, the committee had presentation sessions at the Government Complex Sejong and was shown around the sport and non-sport venues, including Daejeon World Cup Stadium, where opening and closing ceremonies will be held, Yi Sun-sin Gymnasium, and Chungnam National University Sejong Hospital. The committee mainly checked the improvements on the items mentioned at the technical inspection last month. The FISU delegation will depart on August 31.
