Professor Andrew Ng, who appeared on Korea's public broadcaster EBS, said, "In the field of AI, a lot of time has been devoted to developing software.โ
There are people we feel way too familiar with, even though we have never met. Once, it was the famous MCs on TV, and these days, maybe it's your favorite YouTubers. In a way, celebrities spend a lot of time with people without even realizing it.
In that vein, visiting Korea this week is none other than 'celebrity' of the AI world, Adjunct Professor Andrew Ng of Stanford University. Millions have viewed his lectures, and the educational platform Coursera, which was founded by Ng, has 110 million registered users. Products from factories using solutions from Landing AI, which is also founded by Ng, surround us in our everyday lives.
In this newsletter, we will delve into Professor Andrew Ng's career and vision through the two keywords 'Data-centric' and 'AI for Everyone'.
Professor Andrew Ng is...
- *Born in 1976 in the UK, he now holds American citizenship.
- *In 2011, he established Google Brain, founded Coursera in 2012, and was recruited as Baidu's chief scientist in 2014. Since leaving Baidu in 2017, he has been actively involved in establishing the AI education platform 'Deeplearning.ai', the AI solutions company 'Landing AI', and the AI startup fund 'AI Fund'.

Professor Andrew Ng emphasizes the importance of data in AI systems.
One of the first words that comes to mind when thinking of Professor Andrew Ng is 'Data-centric AI'. In summary, it means that 'improving data is more efficient than improving models in enhancing AI performance'. Personally, I think that the establishment of Landing AI best reflects the concept of Data-centric AI.
Landing AI is a company that primarily provides smart factory solutions at manufacturing sites. In 2021, Samsung Electronics also co-invested approximately 67.5 billion won in Landing AI. Let's hear Professor Ng's thoughts on Landing AI and data-centricity from an interview in 2022.
"In consumer software, you can build one monolithic AI system to serve a hundred million or a billion users, and truly get a lot of value in that way,โ he said. โBut in manufacturing, every plant makes something different. So every manufacturing plant needs a custom AI system that is trained on their data.โ The challenge that many companies in the AI world face, he continued, is how, for example, to help 10,000 manufacturing plants build 10,000 customer systems.
These Data-centric-based customized AI solutions originate from the unique and personal scale data each company possesses. Through a TED talk given last April, we got a further glimpse into Professor Ng's vision for data-centric AI.

Oct 2022, Youtube "How AI Could Empower Any Business", TED
According to Professor Ng, currently, only some big tech companies use AI routinely for problem-solving. Therefore, AI today is like the religious texts that only high-ranking clergy could read in the past. Hundreds of years ago, most of society thought that 'not everyone needs to be able to read and write.' The ability to read was possessed only by a minority, and the rest of the people simply went to them and listened to their stories.
Similarly, AI now is primarily used by highly skilled engineers affiliated with big tech companies. However, depending on its use, AI can also be applied to a small clothing store or a pizza shop run by a small business owner, if they have appropriately collected data. In my opinion, this is what he means by Data-centric AI and AI for everyone.

The ability to utilize AI today is akin to the knowledge power of the Middle Ages.
Looking through each of Professor Ng's interviews and lectures, we can see a unified vision that explains why he established Coursera, where most lectures are free, why he set up an AI fund to invest in promising startups, and why he left his position as Baidu's chief scientist to start a new company.
Finally, we conclude this letter by quoting part of an interview with Professor Ng on the recent fervor for generative AI.

Generative AI and Supervised Learning, Data Labeling |
|

โAndrew Ng: Even with generative AI buzz, supervised learning will create โmore valueโ in short term, VentureBeat, 23.02.22โ
VB: Over the past year, generative AI models like ChatGPT/GPT-3 and DALL-E 2 have made headlines for their image and text generation prowess. What do you think is the next step in the evolution of generative AI?
Andrew Ng: I believe generative AI is very similar to supervised learning, and a general-purpose technology. I remember 10 years ago with the rise of deep learning, people would instinctively say things like deep learning would transform a particular industry or business, and they were often right. But even then, a lot of the work was figuring out exactly which use case deep learning would be applicable to transform.
So, weโre in a very early phase of figuring out the specific use cases where generative AI makes sense and will transform different businesses.
Also, even though there is currently a lot of buzz around generative AI, thereโs still tremendous momentum behind technologies such as supervised learning, especially since the correct labeling of data is so valuable. Such a rising momentum tells me that in the next couple of years, supervised learning will create more value than generative AI. |
