The Embodiment of Modern Tradition among Itaewon Oraegages

There are towns in Seoul known for emanating unusual vibes. Despite Itaewon being particularly known for its exotic ambience, there are certain places still surviving the passage of time to manifest traditional yet trendy appeal called oraegages (lit. "100-year stores").

Itaewon Foreign Bookstore, which has been in business for nearly 50 years since 1973, mostly sells secondhand foreign books that are difficult to find elsewhere. Sturdy bookshelves made by the original owner are filled with many unusual books from around the world.

Carrying on a near half-century tradition in the Haebangchon area, Hanshin Onggi sells a variety of items ranging from earthenware pots to small pieces of pottery. You will discover the most traditional Korean objects in the most exotic town in Seoul.

Daeseong Mounter, where you can find traditional Korean paintings or scroll, is another oraegage in Itaewon that has been in business for almost 60 years over two generations. Don't forget to stop by Itaewon to purchase the most Korean-style artwork if you're traveling in the area.

Before convenience stores became prevalent on most streets throughout Korea, relatively smaller neighborhood marts were more commonly spotted, and among them, Hapdeok Super has been in business at the exact same spot for over 50 years. The old-time atmosphere of the shop appeals as a perfect photo spot. Come check out the Visit Seoul Editor’s Picks page for more information on the oraegages of Itaewon.
